Biography

Muriel Beckett has been fascinated by the process of handweaving since discovering the craft while a student at DLIADT and later at the National College of Art and Design Dublin. The Irish Export Board awarded Muriel a scholarship to Finland to complete her training. The simple clean lines inherent in Scandanavian design proved to be a strong influence. Other sources of inspiration include Japanese traditional and contemporary design, kilms and oriental rugs. Living and working close to the sea and the mountains in County Wicklow has had a strong influence on Muriel’s current use of colour, pattern and texture. Much of her recent work reflects the subtle natural colours of the Irish landscape.

Muriel Beckett specialises in individual colourful wall hangings and floor rugs which are made to commission or for selected exhibitions. Her pieces have sold all over the world from Japan to Bahrain to Lesotho and to America. Muriel has a wide experience of the commissioning process both for corporate and private clients.

Artistic/Creative Vision

The Studio

The weaving studio is situated in Greystones County Wicklow, set in a quiet picturesque surroundings beside the sea and nearby Wicklow hills makes it the perfect setting for creativity. The studio houses four handweaving looms, a whide range of yarn and a selection of wall hangings and rugs which can be viewed by appointment.

Rugs
Floor rugs are generally made to commission. Each rug created incorporates a unique combination of colours, pattern and weave. The maximum single width is 145cms wide by any length. Materials used are a strong linen warp and wool carpet yarn in the weft.

Muriel Becketts tapestries are one-off contemporary pieces suitable for private homes, corporate and public buildings. Each wall hanging is unique, they are all individually designed and hand woven using high quality materials such as wool and linen. Designs are inspired by landscape, nature and geometric repeating forms, combined with an exploration of woven patterns, colour mixes and textural qualities. Sizes vary from miniature framed tapestries to large scale wall hangings.
